What is Total Protein?
The combined amount of albumin and globulin proteins in blood; it reflects nutrition, liver synthesis, and immune-protein levels.
Total protein measures the combined concentration of the two main protein groups in blood, albumin and globulin, and so gives a broad snapshot of nutrition, liver protein synthesis, and immune-related proteins. Because albumin is made by the liver and many globulins arise from the immune system, an abnormal total protein can stem from quite different places, which is why it is usually broken down into its albumin and globulin components and expressed as the albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio. A low total protein can accompany liver disease, kidney protein loss, or malnutrition, while a high value can reflect chronic inflammation or certain blood conditions. On its own, total protein rarely pinpoints a cause and instead prompts more specific testing. Hydration and pregnancy can also shift the measured value.
