What is Albumin/Globulin (A/G) Ratio?
A calculated comparison of the two main groups of blood proteins, albumin and globulins, usually reported with a total protein test.
The A/G ratio compares albumin (a protein made by the liver) with globulins (a group of proteins including antibodies), and it is calculated from a total protein and albumin measurement rather than measured directly. A lower ratio can be associated with conditions where albumin drops or globulins rise, such as some liver, kidney, or inflammatory conditions. A higher ratio can be associated with certain other imbalances. It is a general clue interpreted alongside the individual protein values, and comes automatically with the routine metabolic panel.
