What is Anti-Ro (SS-A) Ab?
Antibodies targeting a protein in the cell nucleus and cytoplasm, most often associated with Sjögren's syndrome or lupus.
Anti-Ro, also called anti-SS-A, is an autoantibody directed against ribonucleoprotein complexes involved in RNA processing. It is one of the most common antibodies found in Sjögren's syndrome, a condition affecting moisture-producing glands, and is also frequently seen in systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinicians order this test when dryness of the eyes or mouth, joint symptoms, or a lupus-like rash raise suspicion for one of these conditions. Anti-Ro antibodies are also relevant during pregnancy because they can cross the placenta and are associated with a small risk of a slow fetal heart rhythm or a skin rash in the newborn. As with other autoantibodies, a positive result is one clue that is interpreted together with symptoms, other antibody tests, and clinical examination.
