What is Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA)?
A blood test that looks for antibodies which mistakenly target the nucleus of your own cells, used to help explore possible autoimmune conditions.
An ANA test screens for antibodies that can attack the center (nucleus) of your own cells, and it is used to help investigate autoimmune conditions such as lupus when someone already has symptoms. A positive result is usually described with a titer (how far the blood was diluted and still showed antibodies, e.g. 1:160 - higher numbers mean more antibody) and a pattern (the shape of the staining under the microscope, such as homogeneous or speckled, which can hint at certain conditions but does not diagnose them). Importantly, a positive ANA is common in healthy people: roughly 20 to 30 percent of the general population has detectable ANA, and positivity rises with age, especially in women over 65 - so a positive result on its own can be associated with an autoimmune condition but by no means confirms one, and is always interpreted with symptoms and other tests.
