Transferrin Saturation
Here’s what it reflects — and what to do about it.
Longetic pulls together every lab and record you’ve had, follows how Transferrin Saturation changes over time, and explains what’s shifting — so you walk into your next appointment prepared, with reminders for retests along the way.
What is Transferrin Saturation?
The percentage of your blood iron-carrying capacity that is actually filled with iron right now.
Transferrin saturation shows how full your iron transport system is, which helps tell apart having too little iron from having too much. A low percentage can be associated with iron deficiency, meaning the transport proteins are carrying less iron than they could. A high percentage can be associated with iron overload, such as in hemochromatosis. It is part of an iron-studies workup rather than a routine screen for the general population.
