What is Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC)?
A measure of how much iron your blood could carry if all its iron-transport proteins were full.
TIBC reflects the amount of iron-carrying protein (mainly transferrin) available, which your body adjusts up or down depending on its iron needs. A lower capacity can be associated with iron overload, or with inflammation, chronic illness, or undernutrition. A higher capacity can be associated with iron deficiency, because the body makes more transport protein when iron is scarce. It is measured as part of an iron-studies panel rather than a routine general screen.
