What is MCV Antibody?
Detects antibodies against mutated citrullinated vimentin, studied alongside other markers to help evaluate rheumatoid arthritis.
Anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin (anti-MCV) antibodies target a modified form of the protein vimentin that appears in inflamed joint tissue. Like anti-CCP antibodies, anti-MCV is part of the citrullinated-protein antibody family associated with rheumatoid arthritis and relates mainly to the immune and musculoskeletal systems. Clinicians may order this test in people with joint pain, swelling, or stiffness when rheumatoid arthritis is being considered, particularly if rheumatoid factor results are inconclusive or when additional supporting evidence is wanted. Because citrullinated-protein antibodies can appear before joint damage is visible on imaging, they are sometimes used to help identify inflammatory joint disease earlier. As with other autoantibodies, a result is always considered together with symptoms, physical exam findings, and other laboratory tests rather than in isolation.
