What is Luteinizing Hormone (LH)?
A pituitary hormone that triggers ovulation in women and helps the testicles make testosterone in men.
LH is made by the pituitary gland and works closely with FSH; in women a mid-cycle surge triggers release of an egg, and in men it signals the testicles to produce testosterone. It is interpreted by sex and, in menstruating women, by cycle timing, and is usually measured together with FSH. Higher LH can be associated with the ovaries or testicles not working normally (including menopause) or conditions such as PCOS; lower LH can be associated with a pituitary or hypothalamus problem. A result is only meaningful alongside symptoms and other hormone levels.
