What is Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)?
A pituitary hormone that helps control the ovaries in women and sperm production in men.
FSH is made by the pituitary gland and works with LH to manage reproduction, triggering egg growth in women and supporting sperm production in men. It is interpreted by sex and, in menstruating women, by cycle timing, and is often measured together with LH. Higher FSH can be associated with the ovaries or testicles not responding normally (including perimenopause and menopause, when higher FSH is expected); lower FSH can be associated with a pituitary or hypothalamus problem. Testing is usually not needed at age 45 or older, because higher FSH is a normal sign of menopause.
