What is Androstenedione?
A hormone your adrenal glands and reproductive organs make as a building block for testosterone and estrogen.
Androstenedione is a precursor hormone, meaning the body uses it as raw material to make sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen. Higher levels can be associated with conditions that raise androgen activity, such as polycystic ovary syndrome or certain adrenal gland disorders, and in women may relate to symptoms like acne or extra hair growth. Lower levels can be associated with reduced adrenal or ovarian hormone output. It is an extended hormone test read alongside other androgen measurements and your symptoms.
