What is Amylase?

An enzyme, made mostly by the pancreas and salivary glands, that helps your body break down carbohydrates.

Amylase is a digestive enzyme that helps break down carbohydrates, and most of it comes from your pancreas and salivary glands. Higher-than-usual levels can be associated with pancreas conditions such as pancreatitis, a blocked pancreatic duct, or salivary gland problems. Lower levels are uncommon and can sometimes be associated with long-standing pancreas damage or certain kidney and liver conditions. It is often checked alongside lipase when a pancreas problem is suspected.
