What is VLDL Cholesterol?

The cholesterol carried by very-low-density lipoproteins, the particles that mainly transport triglycerides.

VLDL cholesterol is the cholesterol carried on very-low-density lipoprotein particles, which are made by the liver and mostly ferry triglycerides to the body. It is usually estimated as about one-fifth of the triglyceride level rather than measured directly, and higher VLDL, like LDL, can be associated with plaque buildup in the arteries. It typically appears as part of an extended lipid report rather than being a separate stand-alone test.
