What is Serum Iron?
The amount of iron currently circulating in your blood.
Serum iron is one piece of the iron picture, usually read together with other iron tests because the level naturally rises and falls through the day. A low level can be associated with not having enough iron available, which may contribute to iron-deficiency anemia. A higher level can be associated with iron overload (such as hemochromatosis) or with the effects of iron supplements, transfusions, or certain liver conditions. It is ordered for symptoms or suspected iron problems rather than as a routine screen for everyone.
