What is Lp-PLA2 (Lipoprotein-Associated Phospholipase A2)?
An enzyme carried mostly on LDL that is linked to inflammation inside artery walls.
Lp-PLA2 is an enzyme that travels mainly with LDL cholesterol and is tied to the inflammation that can build up within artery walls. Higher levels have been associated in research with a greater risk of plaque-related cardiovascular events, which is why it is sometimes used as an add-on to help refine risk in people who are already at intermediate risk. It is an advanced, optional marker rather than part of a routine cardiovascular panel.
