What is Estradiol (E2)?
The main form of estrogen in women of reproductive age, also present in smaller amounts in men.
Estradiol is the principal estrogen, made mainly by the ovaries; it helps drive the menstrual cycle and supports bone and brain health, and men make small amounts too. Its meaning depends heavily on sex, age, and, in women, the point in the menstrual cycle, so results are always read in context. In women, levels can be associated with early or delayed puberty, PCOS, fertility problems, or the transition toward menopause; in men, higher levels can be associated with breast tissue growth or other hormone imbalances. A single reading does not diagnose a condition.
