What is DHEA-Sulfate (DHEA-S)?
An androgen (a male-type sex hormone) made mostly by the adrenal glands, present in both men and women.
DHEA-S is a steroid hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands and serves as a building block for testosterone and estrogen; levels peak in young adulthood and decline with age. Because it comes largely from the adrenals, it is often used to check how those glands are working. Higher DHEA-S can be associated with adrenal conditions such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, an adrenal tumor, or PCOS in women; lower levels can be associated with Addison disease or a pituitary problem. Results are interpreted with symptoms, age, sex, and other hormone tests.
