What is Copper?
An essential trace mineral, and this test measures the amount circulating in your blood.
Copper helps your body make energy, build connective tissue, and keep nerves and blood vessels healthy. A blood copper level that is too low or too high can be associated with certain inherited conditions, nutrition patterns, or changes in how the body stores this mineral. Because most copper in blood travels attached to a protein called ceruloplasmin, this test is often looked at alongside that protein. It is usually ordered when there is a specific reason to check copper balance rather than as a routine screen.
