What is Cholinesterase (Serum)?
An enzyme made by the liver that can reflect liver protein production and certain exposures.
Serum cholinesterase, also called pseudocholinesterase, is an enzyme the liver produces, and its level can reflect how well the liver is making proteins. Lower levels can be associated with reduced liver function, certain inherited variations that affect how some anesthesia medicines are broken down, or exposure to some pesticides. It is a specialized test used for those specific questions, such as before certain anesthetics or in suspected organophosphate exposure, rather than a routine liver check.
