What is Apolipoprotein B (ApoB)?
A protein on the surface of the cholesterol particles most likely to clog arteries, so measuring it roughly counts how many of those particles you have.
Because there is one ApoB on each artery-clogging particle, this test estimates the number of harmful particles in your blood, which can add detail beyond a standard cholesterol test. A higher ApoB can be associated with more of these particles and a greater risk of atherosclerosis. It is not a routine screening test; the 2018 ACC/AHA cholesterol guideline treats an ApoB of 130 mg/dL or above as a risk-enhancing factor and notes a relative indication to measure it when triglycerides are 200 mg/dL or higher.
