What is Anion Gap?
The anion gap is a calculated value from the electrolyte panel that estimates the difference between measured positively and negatively charged electrolytes. It helps detect and classify acid-base disturbances.
The anion gap is not measured directly but calculated, typically by subtracting chloride and bicarbonate from sodium, to reveal unmeasured acids in the blood. Its main use is in evaluating metabolic acidosis: a high anion gap suggests a buildup of acids such as those seen in uncontrolled diabetes, severe dehydration, kidney disease, or certain poisonings, while a normal-gap acidosis points toward different causes. Because the calculation depends on albumin and on the same electrolytes it is derived from, a low albumin can mask a true elevation, so results are interpreted in context. A low anion gap is uncommon and is usually rechecked, often reflecting a low albumin level.
